Insurance Clauses Are Not Hidden Agenda-Asiwaju Jide Bello

The chairman of the Abuja Area Committee of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers, NCRIB, Asiwaju Jide Bello, has explained that insurance guidelines often regarded as hidden clauses are not hidden agenda.

Bello gave the explanation on Friday while interacting with newsmen shortly before his investiture as the twelfth chairman of the council, adding that the clauses are detailed instructions designed to help policy takers operate a policy with better and seamless understanding of the policy with a view to avoiding hitches in payments.

According to him, the so-called hidden clauses are not in anyway designed to short-change the policy taker but ones to enhance quality insurance when fully understood. He therefore urged all policy takers to take advantage of the services of brokers for full and complete interpretation of all attached clauses in order to have a better understanding of the policy's dos and don'ts.

"What we don't understand is that when you have a policy you must read, you have a lot of clauses on what you need to do and what you need not to do. But because you're so busy, you don't have the time to read your document. That is where the broker comes in. The broker will read the clauses and interprete them to you because the insurance company will not have the time to do this or don't do that," he explained.

Bello urged policy takers to always engage brokers, whom he described as the link between the insurance companies and the insured, whose services the latter does not have to pay any extra fee.

Fortunately, the client does not have to pay the broker. You get your permission from the insurance company. So what you do is to engage the broker to get the details for you, break those clauses and he will now guide you. For instance, it is the broker's responsibility to say if you are not a licensed person, you cannot drive a car because if you drive a car, and you're not a licensed driver and there is a claim, the insurance company will not pay you that claim."
