Biden Bans TikTok

Us President, Joe Biden, on Wednesday, signed a bill that seeks to ban TikTik if its China-based parent company, ByteDance, fails to divest the app within twelve months.

The signing of the bill into law effectively activated the clock for ByteDance to begin the divestment process with an initial nine months to process the deal, a period the president can extend by three months upon noticing that progress has been made.

Meanwhile, TiTok has vowed to resist the move, vowing to seek redress in the court over what it called an “unconstitutional law”.

“As we continue to challenge this unconstitutional ban, we will continue investing and innovating to ensure TikTok remains a space where Americans of all walks of life can safely come to share their experiences, find joy, and be inspired,” Haurek said.  While responding to the news of the new legislation, TikTok CEO, Shou Chew, described the new law as a ban on the operation of TikTok.

“Make no mistake, this is a ban,” he said, rejecting claims by some lawmakers that the move is geared towards a disconnection between the platform from Chinese ownership.

"We are confident and we will keep fighting for your rights in the courts.

"The facts, and the Constitution, are on our side... rest assured, we aren't going anywhere.

“A ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your voice,” Chew added.

Meanwhile American rapper, Soulja Boy, has expressed his readiness to acquire the beleaguered social media app. The rapper, who jokingly indicated interest in acquiring the app on his X handle, however, condemned the new law, insisting that if the US government can place a ban on the app, it can also apply the same measure to any other one in the future.

“I can’t believe yall just gon let them ban TikTok like that. And yall think it’s funny. If they do it to this app they can do it to any app or site. Not cool fr yall will see later,” he wrote in condemnation of the law.

“How much yall want for TikTok? I’ll buy it. @tiktok_us.” he added, apparently riling the ban.
