FG Extends Accreditation Withdrawal to Kenyan, Ugandan and Nigerien Varsities

Sequel to the withdrawal of accreditation to and evaluation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo, the federal government on Wednesday said it will extend the sanction to universities from Uganda, Kenya and Niger Republic.

“We are not going to stop at just Benin and Togo.

“We are going to extend the dragnet to countries like Uganda, Kenya, even Niger here where such institutions have been set up,” Education Minister, Prof Tahir Mamman said.

It would be recalled that an undercover journalist with the Daily Nigeria newspapers disclosed details of how he obtained a degree from Benin Republic-based university in under two months. Following the acquisition, he successfully deployed for the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

Consequent upon the revelation, the federal government wielded the hammer by immediately suspending accreditation of certificates from the two West African nations.

It also launched an enquiry into the matter with the minister promising that the report will be ready in three months.

He also threatened that students who had dealings with such institutions would not be considered as victims but criminals. According to him, security agents would also go after those who hold what he described as "fake certigicates" from foreign countries and are already using same to secure opportunities in the country.

“I have no sympathy for such people. Instead, they are part of the criminal chain that should be arrested,” he said.
