Anambra Police Intercepts Gunman in Awada, Recovers AK-47 Rifle
Police operatives in Anambra state over the Easter weekend, arrested an adult male holding a bag containing an AK-47 Assault rifle in Awada, Idemili North council area.
The man, who upon sighting the police, took to his heels. However, he was chased, caught and overpowered, wherein his bag was searched and the rifle, with breech No. 25008266, was found. Search of database has shown that it was not among firearms on charge to Anambra State Command.
Upon interrogation, the suspect disclosed that the weapon was procured for a showdown with a rival cult group.
While commending the operatives for their diligence and bravery, the state police boss, CP Aderemi Adeoye, directed that the investigation be widened and deepened to bring to book all those connected with the arms trafficking including an alleged financier abroad, who provided funds for the purchase.
Meanwhile, in its determination to lamp down on Insurgency in the state, the command raided and destroyed camps suspected to belong to insurgents that attacked two police stations at Awgbu, Orumba North and Neni in Anaocha council areas within the last two weeks.
The raid, which followed the destruction of two other camps, one in Ogbunka, Orumba South and the other in Achalla, Awka North council areas, was coordinated by the Joint Security Force, and ordered by CP Adeoye to identify and destroy any camp being used by insurgents to launch attacks within the Command.
"Yesterday, Friday, 29th March, 2024 The Joint Security Force raided the forests of Ogbunka in Orumba South LGA and found scattered camps of the insurgents. The cowardly criminals fled in the face of the onslaught.
"Six Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) already primed for attacks  and two Walkie Talkies were recovered from the Camps," a statement by command spokesperson, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, said.
It added that the command also recovered substantial food and groceries supply from the camps which were subsequently destroyed to deny the insurgents bases for launching attacks.
The raid, the statement further noted, will continue "...with a view to eliminating the terrorists, rescuing abducted victims, recovering firearms and stolen vehicles in their possession."
