NECO Indicts 93 Schools Over Cheating

The National Examination Council, NECO, has revealed that 93 of the centres where candidates sat for the 2023 Internal Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, were involved in malpractices.

According to examination body, the entire 93 schools were involved in what it described as ‘whole-school (mass) cheating following which 52 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting over sundry reasons, including poor supervision, aiding and abetting during the examinations.

NECO made the revelation via its Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, while announcing the release of the results of the examination on Tuesday.

Prof Wushishi noted that council will invite the indicted schools for discussion after which it would impose appropriate sanctions.

According to him, a total 1,196,985 candidates, (616,398 males and 580,587 females) including 1,543 with special needs, sat for the examinations.

Of the number, 737,308 candidates, representing a record performance of 61.60 per cent, passed with five credits, including Mathematics and English Language while 1,013,611, representing 84.68 per cent, had five credits irrespective of the two major subjects.

“The number of candidates with Special Needs is 1,542, which includes 913 candidates with hearing impairment, 162 candidates with visual impairment, 103 candidates with albinism, 61 candidates with autism, 149 candidates with low vision, and 154 candidates with adermatoglyphic, which are candidates with no fingerprints.

“737,308 candidates, representing 61.60 per cent, passed with five credits and above, 1,013,611, representing 84.68 per cent of candidates, had five credits, irrespective of English and Mathematics.”

He advised candidates to access their result via www.neco.gov.ng website ,using their examination registration number.
