Alleged Suicide: Husband of Woman In "Mommy Calm Down" Video In Police Custody
Late Mrs Babalola and her husband.

Edo state police command said it has in its custody, the husband of Mrs Toluige Olokobi Babalola, the woman involved in the viral "Mommy Calm Down" video, who allegedly committed suicide as reported via an X handle on Tuesday.

The husband, Lawal Babalola, who reported the case, had told the police that he found that his wife committed suicide upon his return from the market.

According to his account, he met his two year-old son crying outside and upon getting inside his apartment, he found his wife's lifeless body hanging on a rope tied to the ceiling.

He added that he loosened the rope and cried out to his neighbours.

But the command said his account is in sharp contrast to that of his neighbours.

In a statement released by its spokesperson, Chidi Nwabunor, the command noted that besides not finding any mark of violence on the neck of the deceased while checking her corpse at the hospital morgue, the neighbours also insisted that they did not see any rope when they responded to the husband's call for help.

According to the statement, the neighbours explained that they only met the man lying on top of the deceased wherein they assisted him in taking the body to the mortuary.

“On November 8, the husband, by name Lawal, reported to the Evbuotubu Division in Benin City, Edo State.

“He said that he returned from the market and met his two-year-old child, Ife Lawal, crying.

“immediately, he burst the door open and saw the wife on a rope tied to the ceiling. So he loosened it and cried out to the neighbours.

“They came and accompanied him to the hospital where the wife was confirmed dead and they deposited the body at a hospital mortuary in Benin City.

“Thereafter, he went to the Evbuotubu Police Station to report the incident.

“The DPO went with his operatives to the house, where they recovered the rope and suicide note allegedly written by the late woman.

“From there, the DPO went down with him to the hospital to check the body of the deceased for mark of violence. With all diligence, the DPO checked, but there was no mark of violence.

“Based on this, the Commissioner of Police, Dankwara, directed the DPO to immediately transfer the case to SCID for further investigation.

Nwabunor added that the husband is still in police custody pending when investigations have been completed.

“He’s still with the police and will soon be transferred to the State CID for further investigation,” the spokesman added.
