Ghana Central Warns Over Use of Cedi as Gift Wraps

The Central Bank of Ghana has warned Ghanaians to desist from using the country’s currency notes, the Cedi, as wraps for gift packs.

The apex bank, which gave the warning via its Director of currency department, Dominic Owusu, on Thursday, March 30, insists that the notes are meant to be used as means of exchange for purchase of goods and services.

Owusu added that the use of Cedi for any other means other than as Ghana currency was illegal and subject to prosecution.

Africa News reports that the Cedi is being used by Ghanaians as bouquets and hampers when presenting gifts to loved ones during weddings, birthdays and other celebrations.

Owusu noted that the act not only damages the Cedi and incurs replacement costs, it is also a violation that is punishable.
