Nigeria’s apex court, the Supreme Court, has lost one of its judges, Justice Centus Chima Nweze.

He was said to have died on Sunday at the age of 64.

Justice Nweze was the dissenting judge in the 2020 judgment which declared Emeka Ihedioha of the People Democratic Party, PDP, winner of the 2019 Imo Governorship election.

The late Justice Nweze, is also remembered for his refusal to give accent to the request by PDP’s Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to inspect the Independent National Electoral Commission’s, INEC, server in the case filed against the 2019 victory of former President, Muhammadu Buhari.

Justice Nweze, from Obollo, Udenu council area of Enugu state, appears to be at home with controversial judgments as he was equally involved in the apex court’s split judgement, which declared then Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, the authentic Yobe North Senatorial District candidate, on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 25 February general election .

He was born on September 25, 1958 and recommended by the National Judicial Council, NJC, for appointment to the Supreme Court in 2014.

Meanwhile, the Federal High Court has also lost one judge, Justice Peter Hoommuk Mallong.

Justice Mallong, whose death was announced by the Registrar of the High Court, Hassan Sulaiman, also died on Sunday after a brief illness.

“Hon. Justice Peter Hoommuk Mallong, a judge of the Federal High Court, passed away on July 30, 2023, unexpectedly after a brief illness in Abuja. We will miss him more than words can express.

“Funeral arrangements will be communicated to the public in due,”
