Supreme Court Okays Election of Bauchi Gov, Bala Mohammed

In its second decision of Friday, January 12, 2024, the Supreme Court has upheld the election of Bauchi state governor Bala Mohammed.

While passing its verdict in a unanimous judgement delivered by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, the court threw out the appeal of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its candidate, Sadique Abubakar, which sought to challenge and upturn the outcome of the governorship election that produced Muhammed on March 18, 2023.

The appellant and his party had approached the court, contending that Governor Mohammed, candidate of the PDP, was not the validly elected in the election.

They added that the election was not conducted in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act 2022.

Among others, they insisted that several electoral documents used during the poll were not properly filled.

However, Muhammed and his party argued otherwise, a position that found support in the verdict of both state Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal and the appeals Court.

Apparently vexed by the positions of both the tribunal and Appeal Court, the appellant approached the apex court which ruled in favour of the governor.

The apex court dismissed the appeal, noting it found no reason to dislodge the judgements of the lower courts.
