Donald Trump Indicted

Immediate past President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has been indicted by the Justice Department over attempts to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss

The Associated Press reports that Trump was indicted Tuesday over a four count felony charge which accused him of deliberately working to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election following the run-up to the violent riot by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol.

Already battling succession of legal challenges, the latest indictment, a criminal case, includes 'conspiring to defraud the United States government'.

It is particularly significant because it is an assault against the very basis of the American democracy in a frantic bid to hold on to power.

Among others, Trump is indicted for repeatedly lying about the election results, and refusing repeated overtures from some of his aides to tell the truth; of conspiring with others to try to improperly change vote totals in his favor.

It also alleges that on the January 6, 2021, riot, the former president who was impeached twice, attempted to “exploit” the chaos by pushing to delay the certification of the election results even after the building was cleared of violent protesters.

According to the indictment, his claims of being the winner of the election is "false, and knowing full well that the claims were false. That he he repeatedly and widely disseminated the falsehood anyway in order to legitimize the false claims with intent to create an intense national atmosphere of mistrust and anger, and to erode public faith in the administration of the election.
