Earlier in his opening speech, the Medical Director, Christopher Otabor, expressed delighted for making the occasion, the commissioning of the newly acquired 64 slice revolution maxima CT scan and the state of the art invitrofertilization centre, a reality.

He said the two projects cost over half a billion naira, adding that it represented a significant milestone in his quest to reverse the tide of medical tourism from Nigeria.

“Being one of the most equipped and prolific hospitals in Nigeria (whether government or private), the addition of these two mega projects has further strengthened our arsenal to continue to deliver impeccable multi-specialty medical services for the benefit of Nigerians and foreign visitors to Nigeria

“As you have heard from the preceding presentations, the 64 slice revolution maximum CT scan represents one of the finest CT scanners ever produced.

“It will definitely make life easy for our clinicians as it will solve many of the diagnostic dilemmas previously encountered in the process of making diagnosis and treatment of complex medical conditions.

“With advancement of contemporary Nigerian society and women empowerment in terms of career pursuit, many of our women now get into their thirties before settling down in marriage.” He said.

According to him, science has shown that reproductive efficiency reduces with female age, stressing that good number of the women getting married and desiring to be pregnant would require some form of assistance for them to achieve that desire.

He recognises and gave credit to some of the pioneers of IVF services in Nigeria, and Abuja, particularly for their timeless efforts.

“Even though we now have a good number of centres now offering IVF services, yet the demands still outweigh the supply.

“Alliance Hospital will play its own part in contributing to the solution of infertility through our IVF centre that will be shortly commissioned.” He stated.

Otabor disclosed that in the last 10 years, healthcare services in Nigeria have experienced tremendous growth and sophistication, especially from the angle of private sector initiative, adding that Abuja is taking the lead as a preferred destination for medical treatment by patients across Nigeria and beyond.

He explained that in the past three years, Alliance Hospital has carried out 75 kidney transplant surgeries with 96% success rate, stating that number of the kidney transplant patients was brought in from outside Nigeria.

“In January 2023, we operated on a young lady from Poland who resides in the United Kingdom. She flew in from the United Kingdom to have her transplant surgery done in this hospital and flew back to the United Kingdom after a few weeks.

“Like me, you may be wondering why such reversal of expected trend of events. From my investigations, I found out a few things.

“The waiting list for kidney transplant in the UK is painfully long. The legal issues around donors are complex and the cost of arranging for private transplant is prohibitive.

“The Polish patient took the easy way out by coming to Alliance Hospital, and it paid off for her. I must not fail to let you know that we billed her almost twice the fee for regular Nigerian patients and she was too happy to pay because even our bill to her was less than 20% of what she would have paid for a private kidney transplant in the UK.

“Another interesting case I would like to share with you is that of an elderly Indian man who flew in from India with his donor to have his kidney transplant surgery done here in Alliance Hospital about four years ago. His problem was purely legal. He had an Indian donor but because they were not related by blood, the law prohibited the transplant surgery where he lives

“He had to fly himself with the donor to Alliance Hospital to have his surgery and flew back to India after three weeks of his surgery

“Time will fail me to narrate our encounter with foreign patients in other specialties such as our brain and spine surgery programme, orthopedic and joint replacement programme, etc.

“If foreigners can travel thousands of miles to submit themselves to our knives here, I think Nigerians should take us seriously.” He said

He commended the special guest of honour, Mr. Ahmed Isah, the

Ordinary president, for his acceptance to commission, the landmark projects adding that he made a good choice of selecting Isah, because he was the one the cap fits to commission the facility.

He prayed for him in his efforts in impacting countless number of Nigerian lives and called on God to give him many more years in good health to touch more lives.

“I will also like to appreciate the management of Access Bank Plc., for providing part of the funding for this project. I hope you will give us time to pay small, small.

“Many thanks to general electric healthcare and JNCI who are the suppliers of the CT scan and IVF equipment, respectively

“To my team, the unbeatable team at Alliance Hospital, you remain the best that can be found anywhere in the world. I appreciate your love, commitment and loyalty to me and to the Alliance brand.” He said.

He thanked those who graced the occasion including the friends of the hospital, and professional colleagues.

“I will not end this speech without acknowledging my number one fan, cheerleader and vision partner, our own DFA whom I fondly call my deaconess. I am talking about Deaconess Opeyemi Otabor.

“She is not here today because she has been indisposed for almost three years now after suffering a major avoidable complication from a minor day case medical procedure.

“She was there beside me from the very beginning when there was no comeliness or any physical evidence pointing to our modest accomplishments today. She believed in the vision and threw herself entirely into the ring.

“Unfortunately, we have become a victim of the system we have invested so much and still investing to improve.

“My dear deaconess, I am sorry my profession failed you but your legend continues to flourish.

“I have resolved to use your present predicament as a springboard to continue to advocate for better and safer healthcare for Nigerians.” He said.
