Senate Confirms Justice Tsammani, 10 Others As Supreme Court Justices
The Senate on Thursday, December 21, 2023, confirmed the appointment of Justice Haruna Tsammani (Northeast), the chairman of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, and 10 others as new Justices to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court, with the recent development now has 21 members as the nation's highest judicial body.
Following the deaths and official age retirements of some of the justices, the Apex court had vacancies.
President Bola Tinubu had in a letter to the red chamber nominated 11 Justices following recommendations from the National Judicial Council, NJC.
The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters reviewed the nominations and verified their qualifications.
Committee Chairman, Mohammed Tahir, however, promised the Senate that all nominees met the required 15 years of experience outlined in the Constitution and demonstrated exceptional qualities for the demanding role.
Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau commended the Committee’s thoroughness and expressed confidence in the chosen Justices’ abilities.
Following a voice vote, the Senate unanimously confirmed all 11 nominees.
The justices nominated by the presidency include Justice Haruna Tsammani (Northeast), who chaired the Presidential Election Petition Court, Justice Moore Adumein (South-South), Justice Jummai Sankey (North-central), Justice Chidiebere Uwa (South-east) and Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme (South-east)
Others are Justice Obande Ogbuinya (South-east), Justice Stephen Adah(North-central), Justice Habeeb Abiru (South-west), Justice Jamilu Tukur (Northwest), Justice Abubakar Umar (Northwest) and Justice Mohammed Idris( North-central).
