South Korea Open to Defending Ukraine-President Yoon

Against its principled position of not arming Ukraine in the war with Russia, South Korea has given indications that it may change its stance by extending its support for Kyiv beyond humanitarian and economic aid.

South Korea President, Yoon Suk Yeol, gave the indication while speaking to Reuters in an interview. 

Yoon however, added a proviso-the change is premised on the condition that Russia undertakes large scale attack on civilian targets. 

"If there is a situation the international community cannot condone suc as any large scale attack on civilians, massacre or serious violation of the law of war, it might be difficult for us to insist only on humanitarian or financial support," Yoon said. 

Yoon also gave indication to the effect that there may not be limitation to the extent of assistance Seoul may offer Kyiv in order to defend and restore it's sovereignty violated by its illegal invasion. 

"I believe there won't be limitations to the extent of the support to defend and restore a country that's being illegally invaded both under international and local laws. 

" However, considering our relationship with the parties engaged in the in the battlefield, we will take the most appropriate measures," Yoon stressed. 

Yoon, who is due for a state visit to Washington next week, pointed out that Seoul has been exploring ways to help defend and rebuild Ukraine the same way it received international assistance during the 1950-53 Korean War.

For sundry reasons, Seoul, a major producer of artillery and staunch ally of Washington, has avoided being on the wrong end of the stick with Moscow by arming Ukraine as requested by Washington.

It is considering the number of its companies operating there while at the same time taking into account Moscow's influence over its belligerent twin neighbour, North Korea.
