Shettima Heads To Cuba For G77 Summit

Nigeria's Vice President, Kashim Shettima, on Wednesday, left the country for a scheduled G77+China Leaders' summit in Havana, the Cuban capital. 

The development is contained in a statement made available to newsmen by the Director of information, Office of the Vice President, Olusola Abiola. 

According to the release, VP Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is expected to join other world leaders, including the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, between September 15 and 17 to deliberate on development issues facing members, mostly from the polar south. 

He is expected to conduct bilateral meetings on the sidelines with select world leaders. 

“The summit will equally explore proactive ways of addressing challenges facing the development of the member states by leveraging science, technology, and innovation to enhance socio-economic growth.

“Also, Shettima will, on the sidelines of the Summit, hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders to promote Nigeria’s trade and investment relations in line with the economic development diplomacy of the President Bola Tinubu administration,” the statement noted. 

The summit, themed "Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation", is being hosted by Cuban President, Miguel Daz-Canel, as Chairman of the G77.

Established in 1964 by 77 development nation's, including Nigeria, the G77 is currently a 134-member group comprising developing nations that make up 80 percent of the world's population.

It was formed to promote members’ collective economic interests with a view to creating an enhanced joint negotiation capacity in the United Nations
