I Lost Three Family Members Before World Cup - South Africa's Knockout Stage Goal Scorer
Thembi Kgatlana

Scorer of the stoppage time winner in South Africa’s Group G victory over Italy, Thembi Kgatlana, has disclosed that she lost three family members in the run-up to the ongoing Women World.

She added however, that she still decided to remain with the team despite the ensuing trauma.

Kgatlana made the disclosure shortly after the Bayana Bayana ladies stunned their Italian counterparts 3-2 to secure a place in the knockout stage of the competition for the first time.

The 27 year-old South African also overcame a ruptured Achilles to secure a place in her team.

Her match-winning goal, scored two minutes into stoppage time, saw the team placing second behind Sweden, forcing Italy to face the exit door alongside Argentina.

'We got a lot of criticism, but this is football. It's about who wants it most,' Kgatlana said.

'Over the last three weeks I've lost three family members.

'I could've went home but I chose to stay with my girls.'

The Bayana Bayana will face the Netherlands in the last round of 16 on Sunday.
