Germany Ends Nuclear Race, Closes Last Three Reactors
Germany has ended its nuclear power status.
Europe's largest economy, Germany, has ended its romance with nuclear energy as it switches off its last three Reactors.
The final phase took place with the closure of the Emsland, Neckarwestheim II and Isar II Reactors on Saturday.
The move is sequel to its decision to embark on a gradual phaseout earlier scheduled to end in 2002.
The country's phase out process was accelerated by former Chancellor, Angela Merkel in 2011, following the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.
However, the move, earlier scheduled for conclusion by the end of 2022, was delayed by a fall in gas supply ocassioned by sanctions imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
The shortfall also forced Germany to scramble elsewhere for gas.
Among others, the exit decision was also buoyed by the support of the country's powerful anti-nuclear movement, who employed the double fear of Cold War conflict and related disasters, including that of the Chernobyl in Ukraine, as a push.
