Bus Plunges 15 Metres Down, Kills 21 Tourists
Venice, one of Italy’s picturesque cities played host to a fiery road crash on Tuesday when an electric-powered bus carrying dozens of people, mainly tourists, plummented 15 metres down an elevated road.
According to Venice Mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, who described the accident scene as "Apocalyptic", the bus was on its way from Venice to nearby Marghera
Associated Press, AP, reports that the victims were returning from a nearby composite, when the accident occurred, killing 21 of them instantly and injuring at least, 18 more.
Venice prefecture, Michele Di Bari, said the dead include the Italian driver of the bus, identified as 40 year-old Alberto Rizzotto, at least five Ukrainians and one German.
He explained that two of the dead are said to be children, adding many of those involved in the crash are young, with nine of the wounded, including a 3-year-old Ukrainian girl, being in critical conditions.
Meanwhile, Italian authorities have begun an investigation into the cause of the tragic accident.
The country's fire service says it will consider whether the vehicle's battery played any role in escalating the ensuing fire which spread so quickly after it may have overheated.
Provincial Fire Brigade Commander, Mauro Lungo, said batteries experience what he termed 'critical issues' when they overheat.
