Boat Mishap: 40 Dead In Kebbi
*As passenger boat runs into strong current
About 40 people are presumed to have drowned following a boat mishap in Kebbi, northwest Nigeria.
According to local officials, the incident happened on Monday after a passenger boat ran into strong current and capsized.
“We are still searching for 40 passengers with the help of local divers and believe they have drowned,” said Bala Mohammed, the administrator of Yauri district, where the accident happened on Monday.
“It is a difficult search due to the high water level and strong currents as a result of the rainy season,” one of the local official said.
The Kebbi accident is coming on the heels of another deadly boat mishap which claimed over 70 people, mostly farmers, in Niger state after a ferry boat in which about 100 of them were travelling capsized. The boat was said to have capsized after hitting a tree stump inside the river.
