The President of the United States of American, on Thursday, ahead of the presidential election in Nigeria on Saturday, said US government is not supporting any single presidential candidate or any party but that the United States stands with the Nigerian people as they chart a path toward a more democratic, prosperous, and secure future.
President Joe Biden disclosed this in a statement titled, "Statement from President Joe Biden On Nigeria’s Upcoming Elections" and released by the United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria, Public Affairs Section.
He commended the peace accord signed by the 18 political parties and their presidential candidates in Nigeria ahead of the Saturday's presidential election.
Biden said by signing the pledge, it means that the parties and the candidates have committed themselves into accepting the results of the election as announced by
Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The American president said elections are a fundamental part of a functioning democracy, adding that all Nigerians deserved the chance to choose their future leaders, freely and fairly.
He urged Nigerians to go out on the election day, no matter their religion, region, or ethnicity to exercise their fundamental freedom, and make their voices heard.
He also charged the youths to go out and vote massively, encouraging those whom may be heading to the ballot box for the first time, to do so.
Biden appreciated President Buhari’s firm commitment that the will of the people will be respected.
He encouraged the voters to remain peaceful and patient as their ballots are tallied, and urge the political parties and candidates to live up to their pledges.
