Evacuation of Nigerians Stranded in Sudan May Begin on Tuesday-FG

The Nigerian government says it may begin the planned evacuation of about 2,000 Nigerians stranded in crisis-ridden Sudan.on Tuesday. 

The development was confirmed on Monday by the Director of Special Duties, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA,Onimode Bamdele. .

“It is true that there are plans to get buses to start moving tomorrow morning (today). And as I speak to you, the Director General, National Emergency Management Agency, Mustapha Habib, is already in Cairo because that is the window we are looking at," Bamdele said. 

An indication to the planned evacuation through Egypt was given on Sunday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, while during an interview on Channels television.

According to Onyema, the only option left was for the stranded Nigerians to be evacuated by land given that the airport in Khartoum had been closed. 

Though Onyema did not name the exact day the process would begin, he confirmed however, that the Nigerian government was liaising with its Egyptian counterpart with a view to having a hitch-free evacuation process through its land border.
