Edo Bus Driver Sets Traffic Officer Ablaze

A yet to be identified commercial bus driver on Friday set a traffic officer ablaze in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The incident, which occurred at the busy Adesuwa Junction, Sapele Road, saw the enraged driver setting ablaze a traffic officer attached to the Edo State Traffic Control and Management Agency, EDSTMA,

According to EDSTMA, the incident followed a traffic infraction over which the bus was apprehended for questioning. However, the incident quickly escalated as the driver fiercely resisted attempts by the traffic officers to impound his vehicle and take it to their base.

As the situation escalated further, he stripped himself naked, brought out a container of fuel and doused one of the traffic officers before igniting a fire that engulfed the hapless officer. He subsequently escaped from the scene.

Meanwhile, the largely scalded traffic officer has been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver of the bus, with registration No FFE145XA, has been declared wanted by both the police and state government.

"On apprehension, the bus driver angrily brought out fuel and set one of the officers ablaze. Currently, the officer is in an undisclosed hospital receiving treatment.

"The bus driver is on the run. Anyone with any useful information regarding this driver should kindly report at any EDSTMA office or call 08078679190," EDSTMA said in a statement.

Incidents of commercial bus drivers going naked and fighting traffic officers are rampart in Benin City.
