Several Corps Members have been abducted In Rivers State
Reports say several members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, have been abducted by gunmen in Rivers state.
They were abducted around 9pm on Tuesday, in Emohua council area of the state while on their way to Port Harcourt from an orientation camp in Ondo state.
The incident, according to the Punch newspaper, was reported by a witness, who announced on a Port Harcourt-based radio station that her sister-in-law, alongside other Corps Members were abducted in Rumuji-Emohua, along the East-West road.
The report added that five Corps Members escaped from the gunmen and duly incidented the case at the Rumuji Divisional Police Station.
Though the exact number of those abducted has not been ascertained, FreshNews sent a WhatsApp message to the Director of Media, NYSC, to confirm or refute the claim. However, there was no response as at the time of filing this report.
Reports say however, that the state Commissioner of Police, Okon Effiong, has deployed a police tactical team to track down abductors and rescue the kidnapped NYSC members. This was disclosed by Rivers state police command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko.
The spokesperson, who did not disclose any figures, noted however, that some of the abducted corps members have been rescued and that efforts are on to free the others still with the kidnappers.
