Anambra Flood Sweeps Away Two Children

Raging floods in an Anambra state community on Friday swept away two children.

The two incidents were recorded in Nkwelle Awka, Awka South council area of the state.

 The affected children, who were within four and seven years age range, lost their lives while carrying out activities around the flood plains.

According to reports, one of the affected kids was swept away by the flood while disposing of refuse along the floodplain.

The other was reportedly swept away as he attempted to retrieve his slippers that fell into the flood.

A resident who simply gave her name as Ify, told reporter's that one of the children, a girl, was on an errand to dispose refuse when she was swept away by the flood.

She added that the second victim, a boy, was walking along the flood when one of his slippers slipped off. He was washed away while trying to retrieve it. 

“The mother had sent one of the victims, a girl, on an errand to go and dispose of their waste when she was caught up by the flood.

“She was pouring the waste inside the drainage when one of her legs suddenly slipped and she fell inside the drainage and was carried away by the heavy flood.

“The other, a boy, was walking along the flood plain when one of his slippers suddenly slipped away. As he was trying to retrieve it, the force of the flood swept him and to date, he has not been found,” Ify explained. 

The mother of one of the victims, identified as Ogechi, also confirmed the incident. She was however, too distraught to give details to reporters, insisting;

“Please, I am still in pains to talk now as I am still looking for my child who has gone missing while returning from an errand.”
