All Set for Fury/Usyk Undisputed Heavyweight Unification Fisticuffs

A verbal deal has been struck between Britain's Tyson Fury and Ukraine's Oleksandr Usyk for their undisputed heavyweight unification bout tentatively fixed for April at the Wembley stadium.

The Ukrainian, conqueror of Britain's former World Boxing heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, has agreed to fight Fury on a 70/30 split suggested by his opponent in the latter's favour. However, World Boxing Association, WBA, which confirmed the deal, added that the Ukrainian is ready to take the fight on the term but on the proviso that the British heavyweight boxer must donate a hefty £1m of his share to Ukraine.

“WBA President Gilberto Mendoza received confirmation from Usyk and Fury’s teams that there is an agreement to make the unification fight.

“They request time to work on the contracts to close the deal,” WBA wrote in a statement.

WBA's statement is coming on the heels of negotiations over a possible showdown in Wembley on April 29 as touted by the two puilists on social media. The clash appeared oubtful following after Fury's suggestion that his opponent should only 30 per cent of the fight earnings.

“I see all this talk of boxing fights. They want 50 per cent, Usyk and all this ‘Tyson is being greedy.’

“Where I’m standing, Usyk, you and your team are worth 30 per cent. You either take it, or you leave it, and if you don’t want it, go fight Daniel Dubois at The Copperbox and get a few million dollars.

“You want to make some real money, come and fight ‘The Gypsy King'," Fury, who promised to deduct one percent of the 30 percent over everyday Usyk delays in agreeing to the condition, posted on his socials on Friday.

Usyk, in his traditionally calm mien, responded the same day, agreeing to Fury's suggestion on the purse issue. He however, insists on the condition that Fury doles out £1 million as donation to Ukraine.

“Hey, ‘greedy belly’, I accept your offer. 70/30 split the fight with you on April 29 in Wembley.

“But you will promise to donate £1million to Ukraine immediately after the fight. And for every day of your delay you will pay 1 per cent from your purse to Ukrainian people.” Usyk responded.

The only snag at the moment is that a confirmation has not been received from Fury's camp on the donation demand.

The two boxers hold four of the world's heavyweight boxing crowns between them.
