The Acting Executive Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abdulkarim Chukkol on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 expressed the Commission’s capacity to train delegates of member countries of the Inter-Governmental Action Group Against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA).

The EFCC boss who spoke through the Commandant, EFCC Academy, Commander of EFCC, Ayo Olowonihi, while receiving a team from GIABA on training partnership assessment visit to the Academy, said “it is in our interest as a sub-region to collaborate and co-operate and since GIABA is there as the coordinating body it can partner with the EFCC Academy to achieve this one purpose of capacity building and learning to do things together by member countries.”

Chukkol further explained that the EFCC Academy has the required facilities to carry out continuous capacity development  through training for law enforcement officers all year round.

Devante Alibo, a member of the GIABA delegation said “ the challenges we have is that the technical assistance programme of GIABA to member countries in this calendar year alone is one hundred and eighty-one activities which suggests that it is already over stretched hence the need for this collaboration so that we can outsource or collaborate with the EFCC Academy and have just one GIABA staff attend and that way we can execute many of our activities to the benefit of more member states instead of us to keep postponing…”

The leader of the GIABA delegation, Mam Cherno Jallow, Principal Officer, Strategic Planning and Resource Mobilization said “the purpose of the visit to the EFCC Academy is to evaluate the capacity of the Academy in order to see if we can reach an agreement to cooperate in partnership for capacity building of our members; we came here and we are highly impressed by the quality and the capacity of the facilities to accommodate this huge number of people at the EFCC Academy…”

Jallow said he looks forward to bringing people from the seventeen member states to the EFCC Academy for training as soon as the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, between the EFCC and GIABA on the partnership is signed.
